According to UCDP Armed Conflict Data, there has been a sharp increase in the number of state-based conflicts over the past 10 years. Several new or previously dormant conflicts reignited in 2020: state-based conflict was recorded in Tanzania for the first time in the dataset; and the war in Azerbaijan resulted in more than three times as many fatalities as ever before.

However, some of the deadliest conflicts of the last decade deescalated between 2019 and 2020, such as those in Afghanistan and Syria. Despite the de-escalation of some wars, low-intensity conflicts accounted for more conflicts in 2020 than at any other point since the beginning of the dataset in 1946.
